The Last Scrimshander

This is a 50-year retrospective of some of the work of scrimshander Marvin M. Cohen.

The book includes photos of marvin M. Cohen's etching and carving designs done on fossil ivories.

Marvin M. Cohen is the last scrimshander in whale ivory licensed by the U.S. Department of Commerce. He uses no contemporary ivories, instead, he makes use of non-species-threatening fossil walrus, fossil mammoth, mastodon, and fossil oosik ivories to hand etch scenes that range from nautical to fantasy. His jewelry designs are reflective of the Arctic and sub-Arctic environments, as well as Native Arctic people's spiritual beliefs.
