The Judgment of Helen

By Robert Subiaga Jr.

Overview

Rain. A grassy field. Some time, in a near future. And a beautiful woman who holds a tuxedoed man at gunpoint, making him dig his own grave. He is Thurot Lindsay White, the charismatic dictator ruling as prime minister of newly totalitarian Great Britain. She is Helen MacAlpine, heir to a Scottish lord who had been a noted professor of Religious Studies, and a former fashion model of mild fame in her own right. Intellectually gifted, though rarely in her life taken seriously for it. Profoundly sensitive, but its legacy making her a tortured repository of family secrets and mental illness. Now her father is dead and Helen has managed to kidnap White, believing him to be a monster out of Biblical prophecy... Destined to bring about the apocalypse unless she intervenes. Or does she truly believe that? Even as she also has always been her own most capable and ruthless interrogator. About the shams and hypocrisies of every type of belief - and about her own troubled mind and delusions. Yet the die is cast. She does have him at her mercy. And one thing is certain, when soon he is finished digging. She still must decide whether to shoot.

About The Author

Robert Subiaga Jr's peripatetic path has led, physically, from Minneapolis to Glasgow, Iceland to the Everglades to the Mohave Desert, the lights of Las Vegas to the Sierra Nevada and the Pacific. Armed with a B.A. in Physiology, an interdisciplinary M.A. in Liberal Studies, and a range of various teaching certifications over the years, his abstract wanderings have taken him just as many places, especially as an educator particularly working with outlier populations such as at-risk youth, and/or the highly gifted. Bob was the writer and executive producer of the 2005 short film The Gnostic, starring the late Francesco Quinn. He also has appeared on occasion as a guest on the noted podcast The Drunken Taoist, and was the author of the 1993 novel Eyes. After that long hiatus, The Judgment of Helen is Subiaga’s return to book-length fiction, with a number of releases slated for the upcoming year. Meanwhile he is working on finishing The New Mystic, a non-fiction exploration of the philosophical interrelationship of scientific realism, existential realities, and art.
