Beyond the Veil.
1. There are institutions that teach through books. 2. There are institutions that teach through words and 3. There are institutions that teach through symbols.
True Freemasonry belongs to All 3.
For centuries, men and women have entered its temples, stood before its symbols, taken part in its ceremonies, and attempted to understand a language that is rarely spoken directly. The Square, the Compasses, the Level, the Plumb, the Rough Ashlar, the Temple, these are not merely ornaments of an ancient fraternity. They constitute a philosophical language, one designed to speak to the mind while reaching toward something deeper within the human being. But every symbol conceals a question. And every question demands a seeker. The serious student must go deeper.
To study True Freemasonry is to encounter history, but also myth. It is to encounter religion without being reducible to religion, philosophy without being confined to a single philosophical system, and ritual whose meaning cannot be exhausted by its outward performance.
The True Freemason is given tools. But the real work is performed upon themself. The Temple is raised in stone, but its deeper construction takes place within the character. The Rough stone represents what we are; the perfected stone represents what we may become. The working tools therefore become instruments of transformation. They ask the individual to measure the self, govern the self, discipline the self, and ultimately contribute something greater than The Self. The Square, the Compasses, the Temple, and the working tools all point toward one fundamental principle :
THE GREATEST WORK IS THE WOR WE PERFORM UPON OURSELVES.
This book explores the history, symbolism, philosophy, and enduring mystery of True Freemasonry. It looks beyond the surface of the ritual to ask a deeper question :
WHAT IS THE BUILDER TRULY BUILDING ?
Perhaps the answer is not found within the walls of the Temple, but within the person who enters them.
