This book contains never before published photos and personal accounts of people from throughout Spencer County, Indiana. chronicling the 1937 flood, the most devastating flood in the recorded history of the Ohio River. In the six years devoted to research and interviewing survivors and gathering their reminiscences, nineteen persons ranging in age from mid-nineties to 101 were interviewed and recounted their first hand experiences with the flood, relating their hardships and triumphs and those of their families. In addition, the accounts of a dozen others who endured the ravaging river were incorporated into the book, a tribute to the memories of those individuals who have never forgotten the great Ohio Flood of 1937. With today's too frequently occurring natural disasters, their vivid recollections provide a fascinating example of how such occurrences persist forever in the minds of the survivors. As a bonus to this history, several of the contributors offered their recollections of the freezing of the Ohio River in 1936, a rare occurrence during which huge mounds of jagged ice formed to block the river's flow. The book contains more than 100 photos of or relating to these events.
