Suite of Mirrors

A Collection of Mirror Pieces for the Beginning Pianist

by Pablo Ablanedo

Book Image Not Available
Overview
Suite of Mirrors is a collection of 36 piano pieces for beginning students in which the two hands play together in contrary motion using the same fingering in each hand. The line played by the right hand is the musical mirror of the left hand's line - an exact symmetrical inversion of it. A uniquely accessible notation style allows students of all ages to begin playing songs and practicing two-handed coordination on the first day of lessons.
Description
Suite of Mirrors is a collection of 36 piano pieces for beginning students in which the two hands play together in contrary motion using the same fingering in each hand. The line played by the right hand is the musical mirror of the left hand's line - an exact symmetrical inversion of it. A uniquely accessible notation style allows students of all ages to begin playing songs and practicing two-handed coordination on the first day of lessons. For many years, the collection of pieces presented here has helped me achieve my first and most important goal as a music educator: getting my students to love music and love playing the piano. The importance of having interesting, fun and instructive pieces to play before students learn to read music cannot be overstated. The book consists of three parts: I - Introduction and Guidelines II - Finger Number Scores (for the Students) III - Music Scores (Educator Reference) This is not an all-inclusive method for teaching beginning students; rather, it is a group of interrelated piano compositions intended to complement the beginning student's practice routine and repertoire. I invite teachers and educators to explore this collection freely and with a creative spirit, and to use it however they believe will most benefit the students.
About the author

Pablo Ablanedo has been teaching the piano to students from four to 90 years old for more than twenty years. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he now works as a composer, pianist, and music educator in the Boston area. In 1996, he graduated with a diploma in Jazz Composition from Berklee College of Music, where he took part in the last courses taught by the legendary composer Herb Pomeroy. In addition to his education at Berklee, Pablo has been influenced by the teaching of Susana Bonora, Argentinian classical pianist and creator of the piano performance and training technique C.A.P.T.O., with whom he has been working since the 80's. In 1999, he formed the Pablo Ablanedo Octet with a diverse group of jazz players. The group has released three albums of Pablo's compositions on Fresh Sound New Talent Records. From Down There (2001) and Alegría (2004) received 4 and 4½ stars, respectively, in Down Beat magazine, and JazzMan magazine (France) awarded the multi-artist project The Sound of New York Underground (2004) its highest rating. Pablo's work has also been commissioned by Paquito D'Rivera to be performed by Germany's NDR Big Band, and he was photographed for Diane Asséo Griliches' book Teaching Musicians - A Photographer's View. In 2013, After a successful fundraising project on Kickstarter.com, he released a new album, ReContraDoble, with his Octet(o) on the record label CNM (Creative Nation Music). Pablo lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts with his wife, the painter Lucile Chaurin Ablanedo, their twin daughters and their basset hound Tosca.
