Description
'Stained Sheets' is a contemporary free-verse poetry collection from writer Ahlia Demas. that includes selected poetry from her previous two poetry collects, 'Snow Fox' and '20 Sunsets', both of which were printed in 1998 as chapbooks.
Written with some maturity unlike her two prior collects, 'Stained Sheets' has 'teeth' meaning some subject matter and the sprinkling of some curse words is not for the easily offended. Some poems cover sensitive subject matter as in LGBT and death. Despite that one can find the wit and entertaining odes to be enjoyable.
The title of the book, Stained Sheets' is not making any reference to the assumed slimy stains but stains of life. We are born and swaddled in sheets and in our end, we are covered in sheets. We tear, bleed, sweat, and occasionally drip a little chocolate on our sheets. These poems are tales of such stains, some of which are autobiographic.
I, Ahlia Demas, had started 'Stained Sheets' back in 2008 but things were delayed due to the recession, overworked as Accounts Receivable Specialist at a luxury company, and several traumatic events in 2011-2012 that gave me PTSD, Major Depression and Anxiety issues that caused me to leave my job. For over 5 years I had trouble writing. It was like it was blocked. I had a hard time feeling anything but fear and distrust. I was shakey and had pain issues in my neck, shoulder, and stomach that is how much the mental state caused.
This year, 2018, I told myself that I would fight through the maze and get my writing back. I am proud to say I made it and proud to present my collection of a much more mature collection that contains some of the angst I been dealing with.
