Making a living as a musician is a crap shot. Kids with talent and desire don't always rise to the top. Those that do achieve popularity aren't always because of their expertise but because of luck with a hook. A great musician can draw people to them. Attract them to their look, their style, and their presence. That is an extremely hard thing to do. Bobby St. James knows more about the downs than the ups of the music business and life in New York City.
Bobby is a guitarist. His band The Salonagians were a band in the City at the tail end of the Rock explosion of the '00. Although they failed to break through to the mainstream, each one of the four of them discovered their path in the music business. Though the break-up of the band was where Bobby had to unplug from society so that he could rebuild and remake himself. Though he stayed true to his roots as a guitarist and band leader.
Bobby meets a bartender and yoga teacher named Monica. Bobby and her relationship is the impetus of him confronting and working through the demons he's had in his past. She has her own issues which she has dealt with, which is what makes her a great support system for him. They build together a relationship built on maturity and trust, which neither of them could have had if they met in their 20's.
This story is filled with music. Great rock songs. How music has evolved over the last half a century and how we get it has also changed. Also, how we perceive music and musicians nowadays. So much has changed and yet still there is a current of Rock musicians that stay true to their roots while gaining popularity. This is no easy task.
Lastly, this is a story about family and the never-ending support that family gives those who need it the most. Bobby and his brother may have very different world views, but they are loyal to one another. Bobby's parents are proud of their son and help to guide him while giving him space to be his own person. Family is why Bobby is stable. It's why he is a good person. And that is why he is an interesting character.
