The future ... the remnant of mankind carries on; some are safe in an electronic citadel that keeps the elements at bay, while others have been driven underground into the old subway tunnels where the living is basic and hard-won. A young woman ventures from the safety of her underground tribe to search for food in the ruins of the old world, but finds a nightmare awaits her above ground as she’s captured and sold into slavery. She must find a way to escape, or hope for desperate rescue as a rebellion builds in the labyrinth of tunnels beneath the ruins.

A privileged few live in a secure biosphere in the heart of the old city, a wasteland that decays around them; they’re safe from the elements, but trapped in their carefully appointed fortress. The rest of the survivors of the Great Decline have been driven underground to eke out an existence in the subway tunnels, where tribes have formed around the labors that barely keep them alive. A young woman, a scavenger looking for food, braves the topside and is taken prisoner. Her fate, like many before her, is to serve as a slave for the inhabitants of the Complex. But her capture might be the spark of rebellion the underground tribes have needed to rise against their tormentors. Rushlight is a tale of mankind in the turbulent future, a story of survival at the very limits of our existence.

L.R. Ryan has worked as a screenwriter for international television, and his freelance work has taken him to such far-away climes as Bali and Kathmandu, Nepal. Travel became an integral part of his life growing up, as his family moved to Asia, Central America and Europe for his father’s work. The sights, people, music and flavors of his travels have influenced his life and writing. Reading has always been a delight that could go anywhere with him, and he’s enjoyed a broad range of fiction that includes everything from Hemingway to George R.R. Martin.
