Resilience Not Included

Helping kids learn to bounce back

By Beth A. Terry

Overview

Raising children is the hardest and best thing you will ever do. They are simultaneously funny, frustrating, maddening, compelling, fun and also a nightmare from time to time. If you put yourself into it, you will grow in ways you never anticipated. You will become more of yourself and less selfish. Kids don't come with an automatic Resilience button, but the good news is you can train them. If you are patient early on, the long term benefits are enormous. Don't give up! It gets better. Join me on my journey through this wild and crazy minefield and learn something about yourself in the process.

Description

Beth Terry, CSP (Certified Speaking Professional) had a successful career giving speeches all over the world at conventions, in companies, and at organizational events. She was traveling thousands of miles each year, eventually logging more than 3.5 million miles. Then. Then. One day she fell in love. She wasn't going to do this again, but there he was. And he had four little kids. Four. Girls. Sigh. Beth, being the avid researcher and perfectionist, decided to research How To Parent a little more thoroughly. This wasn't her first OPK's (Other people's kids), but she didn't do such a great job the first time around. So she got busy finding out how to do a better job. Not only for the kids, but for her sanity and her marriage. Now, decades later, with her OPK's all grown and parenting their own kids, she has put it down on paper. It's not complicated, and it's not a long read. Most importantly, there's a table of contents so you can look things up right when you need them. How to hold family meetings, and why. How to handle arguments and the demands of a two household family. How to stay centered while your world is being torn apart by family challenges and career desires. Who should be in charge in a blended family? You might be surprised. What to do when you disagree with the Bio-parent's handling of a situation? This is a quick read and a slow read. Packed with hundreds of tips to help you keep your sanity as you raise these future adults. Learn to let go of old notions about control. Learn some words you can use that are magical phrases for solving a crisis in the moment. Find a few checklists for helping kids learn critical thinking, chore completion, homework secrets and more. This book is filled with useful information that you will pass down to your grandkids. I had a blast living it. I'm having a blast writing it all down and re-living it. I hope you feel the same. Cheers! Beth Terry

About The Author

Beth Terry is an author and expert in Resilience Mastery, Stress Management and Change. She is a Certified Speaking Professional and has been offering her presentations and workshops for more than three decades throughout the US, Southeast Asia and Canada. Prior to opening her training and consulting business in Honolulu in 1989, Beth was the National Manager of Administration for The Shidler Group, owners and operators of Commercial Real Estate throughout the US. Contact her through her website at BethTerry.com or her email: Beth@BethTerry.com She has been stepmother to seven children and Godmother/Foster mother to a handful more. This book represents her successes and failures; lessons and joys found in those journeys. She ruefully admits she had to learn the hard way, as most of us do. In reviewing the landscape of that journey, she realized she had insights and wisdom to share with parents today. Combining her on-the-job training as a mom with her research and training in Resilience Mastery made this book a natural. Beth currently resides in Cave Creek, Arizona and visits her step kids and step-grandkids in Hawaii as often as she can. I asked Beth if there is one great lesson she would share with us. She said, "Parenting is the hardest and the best thing you can ever do with your life. It isn't easy. It will test you. It will frustrate you. It will make you tear out your hair. It will also bring you joy at a level you never knew existed. In the end, it will make you a much better human being."
