Religion, Knowledge, and Nonsense

Essays and Stories By Harry White

By Harry White

Overview

A fact based exploration and analysis of how knowledge of the world improves all our lives, even as nonsense operates just about everywhere, in religion, politics, academia, so that a select few gain reputations as well as the power and control that often comes with it. A nonsense statement will typically sound wonderful (God is love. The true, the beautiful and the good are one), but it can never be demonstrated to be true, which means that no one can prove it to be false. That is why those "eternal questions" never end, and those who pose them become revered forever and ever: the tenured professor who lectures in polysyllabic, compound, complex sentences that no student can possibly understand and who is made to believe that the professor is transcendentally brilliant and they are stupid for not understanding what he or she is pretending to teach them. The reverend whose job it is to lie week after week about what the bible actually says. The panel of experts appearing on podcasts who make no more sense when they say God does not exist as when they proclaim He does. The string theorist who gets gobs of grant money even while admitting that there remains not enough energy in the universe to expose those vibrating strings their theories claim are wiggling down there. Thus does nonsense draw attention away from the subject under consideration and towards the brilliance of the speaker or writer. Religion, Knowledge, and Nonsense is a sensible, no nonsense book, and easy to understand because those facts regarding love and sex, religion and morality, friendship and hatred, are obvious if presented simply, directly and honestly The author--that's me, Dr. White, Full Professor Harry White--taught English Literature for over 35 years, and in all those years no student ever accused me of being brilliant, especially those who liked my lectures. Similarly I (former Full Prof. Harry White) believe you will find this book both simple, truthful and insightfully original.

About The Author

Harry White was born and has lived all his life in Chicago, except for one year in England (M. A. in Eng. Lit., U. of Sussex) and six months in Taipei (visitng Professor at Tai Da Universiity). After receiving my Ph. D. in English Literature (Northwestern University) I taught in the English Department at Northeastern Illinois University until I was harassed into retirement for causing too much trouble. In addition to numerous articles on writers from Shelley, to Blake, Conrad, Dostoyevsky, and God (the Bible), I have published three books: Anatomy of Censorship: Why the Censors Have It Wrong, and two collections of short stories, False Messiahs and Other Disappointments and The Werewolf of Polnoye and Other Stories. Harry can be reached at hswhite@neiu.edu (but no guarantees that he will reply.)
