Ramblings is about a boy growing up in the 1960s in a farm community where the people were connected through real-life needs and the joys and struggles it created in relationships and life. This is a memoir of the reality, humor and lessons of agricultural life. Although philosophical at times, the narrative comes through people and stories, not through excessive discourse on the philosophy of an agricultural heritage. Stories center around the 'inconsequential' people who enrich our lives in everyday ways. It is an honest book which exposes the flaws of these people while maintaining their heroic nature in their daily walk. The book explores the relationships of family, neighbors and community, which will be familiar to anyone regardless of age or background.
A poignant memoir of growing up in a rural setting delimited by geography and family. Characters are as vivid as they are ordinary. It relates the people and experiences of the author's youth with the glow of nostalgia and the gut of realism, all in an emotionally pulsing yet leisurely pace.
About the author
Gilbert Harrison Gordon spent the first half of his sixty years on his family dairy farm. The last thirty years have seen him turn to teaching as his vocation. He and his wife, Ginny, founded Cedar Hall School on a part of the family farm in 1991 and were privileged to teach their children while they taught others. Teaching still brings them both joy and purpose as they continue their 'ramblings' on Rock Springs Road.

A must read! This book is a beautifully written portrait of Southern life. I found myself laughing one minute and crying the next at the all too relatable sentiments expressed. This is a story about the importance of where you come from, the unexpected places your journey takes you, and all the people who help shape you along the way. A must read! Read more
