About the author
Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), American essayist and naturalist, is best known as the author of Walden, a book about living a simple, solitary, self-sufficient life in harmony with nature. Jailed as a tax resister, Thoreau wrote "Civil Disobedience," expounding a philosophy of noncooperation with evil that inspired Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and others. Some have called Thoreau the father of environmentalism because of his passionate defense of nature.
