Pulse Protect: Built to Save Lives

The Story Behind the Mission

By Sid Cortez

Overview

What if one ordinary decision could save a life? Pulse Protect: Built to Save Lives is more than a story about CPR—it's a story about faith, family, purpose, and building a mission that changes lives. From a small garage classroom in Bay Point, California, Sid and Rizza Cortez transformed an unexpected COVID wedding, a handful of CPR mannequins, and one student's belief into a growing movement dedicated to preparing ordinary people for extraordinary moments. Through heartfelt stories, practical business lessons, and real-life experiences, Sid shares the principles that helped build Pulse Protect—from serving the very first student to developing instructors, creating systems, and inspiring a culture where every life matters. Whether you're an entrepreneur, healthcare professional, instructor, or someone searching for purpose, this book will encourage you to start where you are, lead with integrity, and remember that meaningful change always begins with one person. One Student. One Class. One Life. One Legacy.

Description

What if one ordinary decision could save a life? Most people think this is a book about CPR. It isn't. It's a book about purpose. It's about faith, family, resilience, and discovering that the greatest missions often begin with the smallest steps. When a global pandemic transformed Sid and Rizza Cortez's dream wedding into an intimate ceremony, they made an unexpected decision. Instead of spending the remaining money on a honeymoon or new furniture, they purchased CPR mannequins and turned the garage of their Bay Point, California home into their very first classroom. What began with one student soon became something much bigger. From teaching family and friends to earning referrals from local dental offices, from building a trusted team of instructors to developing systems that allowed the organization to grow, Pulse Protect became more than a CPR training company—it became a mission dedicated to preparing ordinary people for extraordinary moments. But the journey began even earlier. As an eleven-year-old immigrant from the Philippines, Sid learned firsthand the importance of faith, perseverance, and adapting to a new life. Years later, after the heartbreaking loss of his Uncle Manny to sudden cardiac arrest, he and Rizza found a calling: helping ensure that more people would know what to do when every second counts. In Pulse Protect: Built to Save Lives, Sid shares the lessons learned from building both SKZ Vending, which grew from a single vending machine into a successful business serving hundreds of locations, and Pulse Protect CPR & Safety Training, where business principles, leadership, and a heart for service came together to create lasting impact. Inside you'll discover: • How small beginnings can lead to extraordinary opportunities • Why purpose matters more than profit—and how both can work together • The leadership principles behind building a strong, values-driven team • Why character always outweighs credentials • How systems create freedom and sustainable growth • The importance of faith, resilience, and trusting God through uncertainty • Real stories of lives touched because someone was prepared to step forward Whether you're an entrepreneur, healthcare professional, CPR instructor, educator, leader, or someone searching for purpose, this book will inspire you to build something that truly matters. You don't have to change the world overnight. You simply have to be willing to invest in one person. One student. One class. One life. One legacy. Join the mission—and discover how one ordinary beginning can create an extraordinary legacy.

About The Author

Sid Cortez is an entrepreneur, educator, and the founder of Pulse Protect CPR & Safety Training, a company dedicated to preparing ordinary people and healthcare providers for extraordinary moments through high-quality CPR, First Aid, and healthcare education. Born in the Philippines, Sid immigrated to the United States at the age of eleven. Like many immigrants, he learned early the value of resilience, adaptability, faith, and hard work. Those experiences shaped his passion for serving others and building organizations that create lasting impact. Before founding Pulse Protect, Sid built SKZ Vending from a single vending machine into a business serving hundreds of locations throughout Northern California. That journey taught him the importance of leadership, systems, customer service, and building businesses that can grow without losing their values. Those same principles became the foundation of Pulse Protect. Together with his wife, Rizza, a critical care nurse and passionate educator, Sid transformed a small garage classroom into a growing mission focused on developing confident instructors, empowering healthcare professionals, and equipping everyday people with the skills to save lives. Their vision extends far beyond CPR certifications—they are committed to building leaders, strengthening communities, and expanding life-saving education across the United States and around the world. Sid is passionate about mentoring entrepreneurs, developing instructors, and helping others discover that meaningful businesses are built on integrity, service, and purpose. His leadership philosophy is simple: prepare well, serve faithfully, and invest in people. Above all, Sid's greatest priorities are his faith in Jesus Christ, his family, and living a life that reflects God's love through service to others. He and Rizza are proud parents to their daughter, Trinity, whose life continually reminds them that every class taught and every life impacted is part of a much greater legacy. Through Pulse Protect: Built to Save Lives, Sid hopes to inspire readers to lead with courage, build with purpose, and remember that every meaningful journey begins with one person willing to say yes. One Student. One Class. One Life. One Legacy.
