Overview
This book is written by a guide with 20 years experience giving tours; who has an excellent idea of the sites visitors are most anxious to see (and learn about); who has a passion to promote Philadelphia and its history; and who wishes to use the convenience of the city to show off its sites - as many as possible!

When I first started writing about Philadelphia's historic sites, it was just to put facts on paper to be better organized. Perhaps, I thought, my research would lead me to learn something new and make giving tours more interesting. However, this soon became more than just my thoughts. To assist with my note-taking, I retraced each stop along my tour. Then I thought, "Why stop with the historic district?" Philadelphia is more than simply the " most historic square mile in the country." Philly is a city whose history, location, and abundance of diversity and tolerance brought it to the forefront of American history more than once. Combined with the modern attractions of other neighboring cities, Philadelphia is a fascinating place whose allure radiates far beyond the historic district.
Philadelphia was voted one of America's most walkable cities by SmarterTravel so it makes sense to maximize your visit by foot. This idea soon became my goal as I continued to type.
While it is not possible to list every site, I have divided this book into five sections with "starting and stopping" points that are convenient and easily accessible by foot or transit. When possible, descriptions of sites include hours of operation, admission fees, and most have an accompanying picture to assist you in finding and identifying the site. Finally, there are specific directions of where to go leading you exactly to the next site.
And so, it is time to lace up and let the adventure begin!
Enjoy the walk,
