Out of the Coop!

Out of the Coop is based on the true story of free range chickens in downtown Pittsboro, North Carolina. The adorable and very friendly chickens got into mischief with shop owners and traffic. The story is brought to life by bright and lively illustrations by Sergio Drumond.

One day,  two chickens, Patty and Pearl, wonder what it would be like to get "out of the coop." Their wish to explore and make friends leads to fun and frolic on main street. Valerie has 3 adult children and 3 grandsons. She started writing in 1970 with a poem about Christmas Eve. It took many years for her to build up the courage to put pen to paper. She loves to write in rhyme and to see her words come to light with collaboration from fantastic illustrators. Her first book "Who Let the Kids In?" was released in December of 2022.
