Overview
"My Book of the Dead" is a graphic memoir exploring grief, spirituality and creative process. From Edwards' adolescent terror of mortality through the Covid-19 pandemic, death has been Edwards' companion and guide.
Description

Grief and Death are never easy things to cope with. From an Evangelical Christian childhood with a troubled mother through questioning and exploration of spirituality, Edwards unveils how she deals with both. Gifted with an early love of art, she describes the slow maturing of her artistic practice into something that was not only a way to make a living but a way to navigate life's biggest challenges, including her divorce. Death is the touchstone for memories of her grandparents, visits to ancestors' remains and reflections on life. She follows her relationship with her parents all the way through to the end of their lives. With the arrival of Covid-19, suddenly the communal meditation on death echoes her own. The book both describes and embodies creative practice as a way to navigate change.

About the author

Kathleen Edwards' first art sales were to sixth grade classmates in late 1960's L.A. - drawings of flower wreathed peace signs for ten cents each. She studied at Pratt Institute and holds a Master's degree in Interdisciplinary Arts from San Francisco State University. Painter, illustrator and book maker, her award-winning work has been widely exhibited. She is the author of the graphic non fiction "Holy Stars! Favorite Deities, Prophets Saints and Sages from Around the World" from Sentient Publications. She lives in the San Francisco Bay area with her husband. When not in her studio, she can be found in her garden - working or lying in the hammock.

my book of the dead What a privilege to travel with the author through her struggles with a mother who could not see her for her own stubborn illusions about life. A father who was only partially able to fill in the gap. The refuge she found in her art. I love the graphics. Subtle and powerful at the same time. I can feel her struggle with her family and how that struggle fueled her need to put it on paper for us to share. Read more

Couldn't Put it Down! I devoured this beautiful graphic memoir! The illustrations are unbelievable and the author's personal stories are heart-wrenching yet paired perfectly with bits of humor and nuggets of wisdom. Once I sat down with this book, I couldn't put it down. A book for my shelf that I will return to again and again. Read more

Gripping Gripping graphic memoir of the girlhood to maturity of a person who creates her way to wisdom and wholeness through making art. The material is economical, humorous, insightful, and inspiring. I read it, laughing and crying, in one sitting, then read it slowly again because it filled me with new understanding of my own oh-so-human struggle with life's difficulties and helped me -- again -- come to terms with the mystery and grief of death. A very thought-provoking read. Although this book is autobiographical, reading it gave me much pause for thought and reflection - and stock-taking - of my own life, family relationships, and attitudes towards death. Many times I would put the book down and let my thoughts, feelings, recollections, and hopes for the future swirl. It's a compelling read, and the artwork is really quite special. Read more

A touching work of art I read the book cover to cover in one sitting. Later, I read it again, this time lingering over the details in the illustrations on each page. The author tells a remarkable story of her perseverance to make art and be herself in spite of a wrenching childhood. She illustrates her reflections spirituality, purpose and family as she experienced significant events in her life. Ultimately, she finds a way to accept and relate to her parents. The illustrations are beautiful, shocking, moving. Read more
