The legendary North American P-51 Mustang, the fighter that changed the face of the air war over Nazi Europe and spelt the demise of Hitler's Luftwaffe becomes reality as you share in the fear and thrill of combat. A testament to the brave men of the USAAF Mighty Eighth, Mustang Summer takes you into the cockpit of the fighters and heavy bombers they were tasked to protect.
For the US Army Air Force the advent of the Merlin engine P-51 Mustang fighter in World War 2 ushered in a new equation in the Intensity and success of the up until then precarious daylight bombing missions over Nazi Europe. For the first time ever the long suffering bomber crews now knew that they had their 'Little Friends' flying protective escort close by, even to targets as far away as Berlin, Dresden and Munich. Missions the Luftwaffe hierarchy did not ever envisage as remotely possible. Experience the devastating effect of the introduction of the Mustang upon the daylight bombing missions of the US Eighth Air Force as seen through the eyes of one young pilot. This dramatic story by the author of Falklands 2 and Off Target takes you back to the dark days of WW2, the challenges, the fears, the hopes of the free world in vivid and powerful detail. Fiction that is closer to fact.
About the author
Born in 1948, Jim Thorn left school in his 15th year to pursue a career with Qantas Airways as a trainee ground engineer. Tyranny of distance though ultimately won out and he left to join the publishing industry where he gained real world skills in the areas of journalism, marketing, advertising and ultimately business management. Launching Australian Aviation in 1977 on a shoestring, the now monthly magazine quickly became the largest selling aviation journal in the southern hemisphere and still prospers as the region’s premier aerospace print and electronic medium. In 1996 Jim won the prestigious London based Royal Aeronautical Society’s literary award for the best air transport feature of that year. He followed that up in 2001 with another RAS award for the best defence submission and in 2005 won a lifetime achievement award for his contribution to aviation journalism in Australia and New Zealand from the National Aviation Press Club. As well as writing hundreds of major features over a career spanning four decades he also wrote his first novel, Falklands 2, a second, Mustang Summer (which you now are reading in electronic form) the following year and Alive & Well in 1999. His latest novel, Off Target, on Australia’s major defence procurement disasters of recent decades was published in 2012. Jim’s passion for aviation dates back to his childhood and since then he has had the pleasure of flying in more than130 different aircraft types ranging from gliders to supersonic fighters. Jim has a daughter, Natalie, and shares his life with Maureen, his best friend and partner and they call New Zealand’s Nelson and Australia's Sunshine Coast home. For more information go to
