About the author

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Brenda Givans is from a family of healthcare workers and immigrants. Her late father migrated to the United States from Trinidad and Tobago in the 1970s and joined the Army as a medic for four years, later serving as a unit manager at Morningside House Nursing home for 30 years. Her mother was a nursing assistant at Metropolitan Jewish Geriatric Nursing Home for 22 years, and her grandmother was a clinic supervisor of 37 years. Brenda's childhood summers and time off from school was spent at her parents' place of employment—helping the elderly. Following in her father's footsteps, Givans joined the Armed Forces as well. She enlisted into the United States Navy at 19 years old and began enrolling into college courses to become a Registered Nurse. After attaining her Vocational Nursing Degree from Kaplan College in San Diego, her military obligations limited her from committing to the nursing field completely. After completing the necessary military education and training for advancement and shipboard safety, Givans decided to pursue her Bachelor's in Professional Studies. It was during this time that her mentor encouraged her to seek higher learning; Givans was inspired her to pursue her Master's in Management with Conflict Resolution. As a life learner, she understands the importance of keeping an open mind and that there are always several methods to solving issues. With her leadership roles in the Navy and her experience as a mother and a wife, there is always a situation that requires a different approach. Recently mindfulness has become the center of Givans's life, and she has embarked on this journey to seek a happier inner self through meditation, yoga, prayer, reading, writing, music, and being one with nature. She continues to inspire others through daily interaction, motivation, and hope.
