Midlife to Medicine

A Survivor's Guide to Higher Education in Midlife and Beyond

By Carmen V. Mora

Overview

Registered nurse and immigrant Carmen V. Mora released "Midlife to Medicine: A Survivor's Guide to Higher Education in Midlife and Beyond," where she delivers a compelling blend of memoir and practical guidance for adults returning to school later in life. After decades of caring for others, Carmen returned to college in her forties, starting in remedial classes at a community college, facing academic failure, and navigating the disruption of a global pandemic during nursing school. Through resilience, advocacy, and a willingness to become a beginner again, she earned her nursing degree and rebuilt her identity. Ultimately, her resilience allowed her to transform and build others along the way. "Midlife to Medicine" offers actionable strategies for adult learners, including balancing coursework without burnout, combating self-doubt, turning professors into mentors, and building life-long relationships. This book is a timely, inspiring resource for people who think it might be too late to being again, but this book proves them wrong—it shows that reinvention can happen at any age.
