Marketing Is Mission Work

How Colleges Can Build Trust, Remove Barriers, and Better Serve Students

By Cheryl Broom

Overview

Marketing is often treated as the department that makes things look good. But in higher education, every message, webpage, meeting, and moment of confusion teaches students something about whether an institution is ready to help them. A strong campaign can create interest, but the experience that follows determines whether trust grows or begins to break. Through practical lessons, real stories, and Field Notes for reflection and team discussion, the book explores how institutions can communicate with greater clarity, humanity, and purpose.

Description

Marketing is often treated as the department that makes things look good: the flyer, the campaign, the website, the email, or the ad. But in higher education, marketing is much bigger than that. Every message, webpage, phone call, meeting, and moment of confusion teaches students something about whether an institution is organized, trustworthy, and ready to help them. A compelling campaign can create interest, but the experience that follows determines whether trust grows stronger or begins to break. In "Marketing Is Mission Work," Cheryl Broom invites college leaders, marketers, communicators, enrollment teams, faculty, and campus partners to look honestly at how institutions show up for students before, during, and after they express interest. Drawing on more than two decades of experience working in and with colleges, Broom explores the everyday moments that shape the student journey. She examines what happens when websites become filing cabinets, messages rely on insider language, processes create unnecessary friction, strategy gets diluted by committee feedback, and marketing promises are not supported by the experience that follows. Broom also shows what is possible when colleges communicate clearly, bring the right people into the room, follow the student beyond the click, tell stories students can believe, and recognize that every person and department plays a role in building trust. Through practical lessons, real stories, and Field Notes designed for reflection and team discussion, "Marketing Is Mission Work" helps institutions ask better questions, make stronger decisions, and create experiences that are easier for students to understand and navigate. This is not a technical marketing manual. It is a practical, people-centered guide to aligning message and experience, strengthening collaboration, reducing barriers, and making the mission visible in the small moments that matter most.

Like a conversation with someone who "gets it" This book is packed with insights but it simply feels like a conversation with someone who "gets it." I found it relatable and easy to digest, and the personal stories help bring the lessons to life with a few laughs. It's a great read for community college teams (whether you’re new to higher ed or have been doing this work for years), and especially for marketers who want to feel a little more seen by someone who truly understands the ups and downs of the work we love. Full of Great Takeaways Cheryl does such a great job capturing what it’s really like to work in higher education marketing. The stories feel very real, and there were so many parts that felt familiar from working in this space. I really liked how she connects marketing to the bigger student journey and makes the ideas feel practical rather than overly complicated or theoretical. It’s smart, honest, easy to read, and full of takeaways you can actually use. Read more

Must Read for Higher Ed Marketers! This book is an easy read that explains why marketing in higher education is bigger than itself and tackles big topics to help marketers in this space do their job better. Some of the topics felt like much-needed reminders and others were ideas I hadn't considered before. I appreciated the transparency of Cheryl's own experiences as a higher education marketing director and marketing agency CEO, the links to podcasts to dive deeper on the topics, and the exercises to practice the lessons after each section. Will be recommending this one, for sure! Read more
