Marcus Glass and the Qing Dynasty

By JD Kelly

Overview

Marcus Glass is a man who gets things done and makes the impossible possible. Follow his exploits from Belgium and New York to Indonesia and Hawaii, as he lives a secret life and continues to go on many adventures, even after he retired. On a routine trip to visit his new wife in northeast China, Marcus becomes involved in a plot cooked up by his brother-in-law, Lǎobǎn, to steal the imperial scepter of the Kangxi Emperor—an artifact from the Qing Dynasty thought to be folklore until it miraculously surfaced in the Forbidden City in Beijing. Made of solid gold and encrusted with the largest and finest gems, the ornate scepter is to be shown publicly for the first time on the Lunar New Year in Dazheng Temple at the Imperial Palace in Shenyang, but Lǎobǎn has schemed to collect a windfall from a buyer from North Korea, who would give almost anything to have the scepter in his possession. With Marcus' history with strategy and his expertise in coordinating such escapades, he assists Lǎobǎn and his cohorts in concocting the perfect heist—but is Lǎobǎn trustworthy, or would Marcus and everyone else involved end up disposed of once the mission is complete?

Description

Marcus Glass is someone we could all be familiar with. He's an acquaintance in life, the friendly guy we all know. The guy with a murky past who seems to succeed at whatever he puts his mind to. Closed-mouthed, yet approachable. But he has a secret life he doesn't talk about, except for a small circle of friends. He travels frequently and lives by the coda that less is more. Our story begins as he travels to Europe to retrieve a bauble stolen from a prominent family during the Holocaust, taking him to southern Belgium, where the Battle of the Bulge was fought. His research reveals the connection to this gold panther and an infamous SS colonel that was involved in atrocities at the end of the war. Upon his return to New York, Marcus decides it's time to retire and relocate to Hawaii. His new wife, a Chinese native, lives in northeast China, where he often visits while they eagerly wait for her green card. While in China, Marcus becomes involved in a plot cooked up by his brother-in-law, Lǎobǎn, to steal the imperial scepter of the Kangxi Emperor—an artifact from the Qing Dynasty thought to be folklore until it miraculously surfaced in the Forbidden City in Beijing.

About The Author

JD Kelly was born in Manhattan during the Cuban missile crisis to an alcoholic housewife and an IBM executive. He grew up in northern Westchester County just north of New York City during the 1960s and 1970s, when children were often feral and finding their way with minimum parental guidance. A near-death experience just after high school changed him, providing the impetus to become a part of the recovery community. His career path ranged from well driller's helper to building sewage treatment plants as construction manager and, in 1999, to real estate executive. In 2023, he retired. As an author, he has written several articles and booklets. His series of novels, beginning with "Marcus Glass and the Qing Dynasty," was initially inspired by his brother-in-law—a friendly and generous man who is a retired Chinese military officer and his menacing appearance. Drawing on his numerous world travels and experience, JD Kelly weaves a tapestry of fact, fiction, and intrigues together to create engaging and entertaining stories. The lead character, Marcus Glass, is guided by stoic principles and navigates his operations accordingly. He could be like someone you are acquainted with, perhaps that enigmatic friend, the one with the secret life, Soon after retiring from his career in New York, Mr. Kelly moved to the rural Makaha Valley of Hawaii, where he lives with his wife Yanjie. They spend their summers at their home in Shenyang, China, where he enjoys morning meditation at the ocean, self-examination, ocean swimming, hiking, travel, and the company of family and friends wherever he may go.
