About the author
Yazmin Monet Watkins is an award winning spoken word artist, actress and filmmaker. She is a graduate of Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA where she was a Posse Merit Leadership Scholar and majored in American Studies with a double minor in Film Studies and Women and Gender Studies. She has performed on a diverse amount of stages from shows with Amiri Baraka and Sonia Sanchez to opening for recording artist's Les Nubians and Dj Quik in addition to being a featured artist at numerous poetry venues nationally and internationally. She was commissioned to write her own original poetry for TV One's "Verses and Flow" poetry campaign with Lexus and has competed at the National Poetry Slam in Cambridge, Massachusetts in August of 2011 representing the Los Angeles Damn Slam Poetry Team. She has been twice featured on KPFK free speech radio's "Flip The Script" and has also taught poetry workshops at the LGBT youth centered Models of Pride Conference at Occidental College. She has directed several short films and a couple documentaries and has acted in many projects from feature films to commercials. Having worked on the sets of major motion pictures like John Carter of Mars, Pirates of the Caribbean 4 and the Muppet's as an Environmental Steward making Disney's films sustainable among a host of other related entertainment experiences with Creative Artists Agency and ABC/ Disney to name a couple, she is the epitome of a creative artist prepared to continue making a difference on this earth. Since her graduation in May 2009 she has performed at a variety of venues including (but not limited to) the Los Angeles International Film Festival, California State University Northridge, Howard University, Columbia University, California State University Los Angeles, Los Angeles City Hall, the Feminist Majority Foundation Western Regional Feminist Campus Leadership Conference at Santa Monica College, the North Hollywood Music Festival, inkSlam 2009 and 2010 Los Angeles Poetry Festival, Word of Art showcase in the North Hollywood Arts District, the West Hollywood Book Fair, LA Valley Pride, the Natural Black Hair Expo, the Black Lesbians United retreat in Malibu, CA, OUTspoken Sessions for LGBT youth and the Downtown LA Art Walk. Most importantly of all though, she believes in the power of peace, love, laughter, freedom and empowering others through art.
