Description

A collection about love, loss, music, and transformation written while cohabitating with a former lover during the tumultuous coronavirus pandemic. Her body of work in this collection focuses intently on the musicality of language. This is evident in her exacting attention to word choice and poetic meter while taking on the challenge of formulating contemporary approaches to timeless subjects. It is the first of Alexis Goodfellow's published literary works, of which there should be more to come. In her view, the works within the collection can be interpreted as poems, scripts, or lyrics in equal measure; she prefers to think of herself as more of a composer and less as a traditional author.

About the author

Alexis Goodfellow was born and raised in the perpetually overcast city of Seattle, Washington. Diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder at age 3, she had a difficult social life throughout childhood and fought valiantly to overcome the adversity associated with the diagnosis. She graduated from Tufts University with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in 2018. Immediately after acquiring her degree, she began her gender transition. Because of her background as a professional software engineer working with strict logical frameworks daily, her musical and literary process often involves writing about contemporary themes and timeless subjects while utilizing the familiar rules, structures, and formats of the past. However, she is also an accomplished jazz guitarist, and as such is not afraid to bend some rigid rules - or dispense with them entirely - if it is necessary to properly articulate an idea or emotion. Alexis lacks any formal degree or certification in either jazz or poetry. Nonetheless, she has garnered a reputation around her current hometown of San Diego as being an accomplished musician and spoken word performer. Because of her musical background, her style of writing is intentional with regards to not just imagery and metaphor, but also the sound of the language as it is read aloud. In fact, her poetic style is so well-suited for stage performance that she was chosen by the event organizers of the Poets Underground Poetry Open Mic series in San Diego to headline one of their events on June 21st, 2022. Alexis continues to create music, write, and balance her creative pursuits with her logically rigorous professional work.
