About the author
Mychal Umi Cox developed a passion for walking in the footsteps of creative energy at an early age. As an adolescent he would often get lost in the story telling of wordsmiths such as Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni, Sonia Sanchez, Langston Hughes, Amiri Baraka and Alex Haley. With all of the political and racial inequality prevalent during Cox’s younger years, he felt their words reaching out and awakening parts of his own consciousness.
Mychal also developed a passion for music at a young age, and studied his craft to become an accomplished percussionist. When it came time for him to put pen to paper and spread his own wings, he was most influenced by the writing styles of Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, Gil Scott Heron & Brian Jackson, George Clinton, Joni Mitchell, Motown and Gamble & Huff.
“Life is too important to be experienced in only one dimension,” Cox contends. As such, it is vitally important to him that he expresses that perspective with raw honesty as he holds on to the energy around him. As a story teller and musician, this is something that he continually strives to accomplish. Often inspired by the precarious nature of human relationships, many of his writings explore a subjective view of the human experience.
This father of four grown children (Kyle, Mychal Jr., Jade and Maya) is a native of the North Bronx, NY, and he currently resides in South Orange, NJ, with his lovely wife, Karen.
