About the author

Persistent reflection and action—being good to others and to yourself. This is the mantra which the author seeks to live out and strongly believes is the key to the creation of a better world for all. David Howenstein is one of those rare breeds who has never worked "full-time" but has had good fortune in molding his own career. While it remains questionable whether his inability to "fully fit in" is due to his quirky character or his need to be free, some will claim that he serves as an inspiring example for those who are disciplined and motivated to do something stimulating but practical with their lives. Living in Japan and founder of a one-of-a-kind "Having Fun Doing Good" network, he has been written up in Japanese newspapers, magazines, and books. In the process, his desire to share his unquenchable thirst for learning and building a more sustainable world, both fun-filled and spirit-instilled, led him on a three year journey culminating in his first book—Jambo's JUMBO JUMBLE. Born in 1960 and raised in a suburb of St. Louis, MO (USA), he enjoyed exploring the nearby woods in search of fellow living entities. After high school and a period of "quality floundering time," he went on to major in Peace Studies, English, and Philosophy at Wilmington College, a small Quaker school in southwestern Ohio, where he was assistant editor of the school newspaper and wrote a column called "the Quavering Quest." His interests in spirituality and service work come largely from his Roman Catholic upbringing and the Quaker influence during his college years. He then went to Nagasaki, Japan to work as an English teacher at the YMCA for a few years before traveling around the world to find out what he wanted to do when he "grew up," only to discover that there's no such condition—it's a never-ending process. After a two-year stint at Ohio University, completing his MBA and MAIA (International Affairs) programs, he returned to Japan (Tokyo) for five years as a free-lance teacher. His passion for nature and seeking ways to empower the disadvantaged moved him to take a two-year "sabbatical" traveling between Japan, the US and Eastern/Southern Africa, visiting over 100 organizations working with development and environmental issues. In the process, he came to realize his longing to return to Japan and set up an organization that brings people into contact with nature while supporting organizations, especially in Africa (where the need seemed greatest), which are working to improve the poor's living conditions at the same time as preserving/restoring the natural environment. This desire led him to found Jambo International in Tokyo in January, 1996. As of this writing, he lives in Tokyo with his wife Miki, who helps in running Jambo. David continues his teaching while serving as the Director of the JAMBO Network, which is made up of Jambo International Japan, Jambo School, and Jambo Volunteers. He is also the co-founder of Jambo International Inc. in the USA, a non-profit organization attempting to set up chapters which carry out activities benefiting the natural environment and society simultaneously. David hopes that this book will be the beginning of developing close connections with others who also envision the embodiment of the reflections herein and the "Having Fun Doing Good" concept that lies at the heart of JAMBO.

Jumbo Jumble: A Sojourn of 365 Visual and Inspirational Delights by David Howenstein is a compendium of inspirational thoughts, ideas, and reflections gleaned from a variety of sources and accompanied by somewhat humorous commentaries, designed to provide food for the heart, the mind, and the soul for a year. These thoughts cover a variety of subjects and each month is dedicated to one of the topics. The opening thoughts for the month of January caught my attention with the striking words: “Your journey begins with an intensive search within. It is only through better understanding of and by yourself that you can clearly see what is working for you and what isn’t. A key point here is to observe yourself non-judgmentally.”

Introducing the book, the author notes that contemporary society is fractured, riddled by many ills, with young people obsessed with their electronic devices, and older people too, with corporations bent on making profits while sacrificing the health of society, a capitalism that feeds on the struggles of the suffering poor, terrorists that cause people to live in fear, and a lot more. In a society like ours, a return to the basic, fundamental values of humanity will definitely restore our humanity, steep us in the wellsprings of life, and allow for the creativity that creates meaning and more life.

Join this inspiring author to reflect on the art of self-cultivation, the beauty of active contemplation, the joy of making our inward thoughts manifest in our material life, and finding the purpose of our life. In each reflection, David Howenstein offers a proposal that will help the reader implement the thought. Jumbo Jumble: A Sojourn of 365 Visual and Inspirational Delights is sprinkled with breathtaking images and illustrations that are as equally telling as they are inspirational. This book will take you to unexpected places in your soul and set you on a path of utter self-transformation. Intelligently written, insightful, and compelling. You’ll need a lot of restraint to read just one thought a day; a generous gift from this author!

By far the best book in my eBook library! Reading the 2nd edition of Jambo's Jumbo Jumble has been a real delight! Mr. Howenstein has successfully weaved together daily writings from the world's inspirational leaders, along with his own stunning photos of nature and landscapes in and around the Tokyo metropolitan region. He then offers the reader a chance to reflect upon his or her own spirituality by posing a question or suggesting an activity that one can take to improve oneself. As a lifelong student and practitioner of self-help materials (I even once served as a national sales director with a company that marketed self-improvement cassette tape, goal setting, and time management programs), I can honestly say this is one of the most inspiring books I’ve ever read that encourage us all to reflect inside ourselves to see what makes us tick so that we can in turn help make the world a better place. With 366 daily inspirations, one for each day of the year, I eagerly look forward every morning to reading the next thought-provoking entry, just like a daily devotional. The book's bibliography sections allow the reader to learn more about the beautiful daily photos, as well as seek out the sources of the writings to explore more in-depth reading. And I would be remiss not to mention the really CUTE and colorful, hand-drawn illustrations by Mr. Howenstein‘s wife Miki. For these reasons, I can highly recommend this amazing publication. Hats off to you, Mr. and Ms. Howenstein, for a job well done! Read more
