Overview
Description
This book invites kids of all ages to celebrate Janet Collins (1917–2003), a special ballerina of color!
Janet made history in 1951 as the first full-time Black company member of the Metropolitan Opera. She was also a noted soloist, a gifted visual artist, and a legendary performer.
The plot is inspired by Janet's life story — including her audition for the Ballets Russes, her rejection because of her skin tone, and her decision to persevere.
It is also set in a magical butterfly world, since the famous musician Duke Ellington called Janet his chiffon butterfly.
Yaël and Kristiana created the book for the 75th anniversary of Janet's Met debut. They hope that it conveys the importance of being inclusive — and shows that the arts community can be a beautiful space that brings us together.
Please enjoy reading about a unique American dance pioneer and her amazing legacy!
