Is Paris Worth a Mass?

Is Paris Worth a Mass? deals with the life of Henry of Navarre and the religious struggle in France. It also highlights the shift in the balance of power in the HRE from Charles V to his son, Philip II, in Spain, the Elizabethan era in England, and the rise of the economic importance of the Netherlands. In addition, it covers important aspects of the Ottoman, Mughal, and Ming empires. Along with major events, political, economic, social, artistic, religious, and intellectual changes are included. It is a novel way to learn history.

Is Paris Worth a Mass? covers the period from the establishment of Calvinism in France to the death of Henry IV in 1610. After the death of the French King, Henry II, his wife, Catherine de Medici, became Regent for a succession of sons. She attempts to preserve the Valois on the throne but is threatened by the rising power and arrogance of the Guises who were ardent Catholics. Spain, under Philip II, becomes France's major enemy as the growing intrigue culminates in the death of the last Valois and final acceptance of the first Bourbon King, Henry IV. France and England work together to curb the power of Philip II. The Counter-Reformation is included as well as the effects of Jesuit missionary activity in India, China, and Japan. Primary focus is given to the difficulties of governing at that time and the need for better organized government. The importance of the rise of international trade and establishment of empire is also included.

Ms. Drews taught history and political science at both the college and high school level. She is writing a series of novels to compliment AP European and World History classes. The purpose is to integrate material from 2-4 chapters in a textbook in order to give students a better feel for the time period, as well as making the learning of history a more enjoyable experience. Her first book, Carpe Diem!, deals with the Renaissance, Reformation, and Discovery. The second, Is Paris Worth a Mass?, deals with the religious wars in France, the dominance of Philip II of Spain, Elizabethan England, and includes important aspects of the Ottoman, Mughal, and Ming dynasties.
