Arden and Paisley Porter are orphans. They have been ever since their parents disappeared years ago. Now teenagers, they are traveling to their country's capital city, Ironhollow. They join a pair of sisters, but have little time to befriend them before the city is invaded by hostile foreigners. In a race against time, they find others along the way, enemies and friends, in their search for Sir Prescott, the only man believed powerful enough to save the city.
