Investigating a Norteño Soldado

Overview

The Nuestra Familia (NF) remains one of the most violent and influential criminal organizations operating inside California's prisons and throughout the United States. This book gives law enforcement professionals a clear working understanding of how the NF influences, trains, and controls its subordinates both behind the walls and on the streets. Inside, officers will learn how the Norteño identity was built: the rules they follow, the violence and sacrifice, the household policies (HHPs) they operate under, and the expectations placed on them the moment they step onto a prison yard; what qualifies someone as a Norteño and how they advance and gain status as a Norteño Soldado (Nsol, pronounced "en-soul"); as an Nsol, what changes once he's indoctrinated into the elite circle. One will also learn how the chain of command (COC) operates, how signs, symbols, cell phones, and kites are used daily, and how the NF education department reinforces education, discipline, and obedience. This book also explains what happens when a striving Norteño paroles. Reintegration isn't always a fresh start; it's another test of loyalty. The regiment expects him to fall back in line immediately while generating money, maintaining communication with the leadership, enforcing discipline, and blending into the community to avoid law enforcement detection. Investigating a Norteño Soldado is authored by a seasoned gang investigator who has twenty-seven years of experience working in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitations (CDCR). This book provides officers the true insight needed to identify, document, and understand Norteño behavior inside a housing unit, on a yard, or in the neighborhood. Strive, hermano. Strive.

Description

How to Use This Book The information in this book is from my correctional experience I have collected over my career. There are different variations of gang behavior and organizational structure within institutions, and as a result, certain details presented in this book may differ from the observations of other correctional officers or gang investigators. Different gang behaviors from one institution to another often stem from factors such as the facility's layout, security level, inmate population, and the presence of influence of gang leaders. Gang leaders shape how the gang operates, communicates, and enforce their internal rules. Terminology and gang position titles can vary from one institution to another. The information in this book reflects how the NF and Norteños operated at DVI and should be understood within the context of that specific institution. My goal is to teach you the infrastructure behind how the soldiers of the NF operate inside prison. That starts with understanding their terms, signs, symbols, and the behavioral patterns that define a committed Norteño. Once you understand how they communicate, how they operate, and how they enforce discipline, you'll be able to conduct stronger investigations, identify gang activity earlier, and testify with confidence as a gang expert.

About The Author

I am a retired California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) correctional officer with 27 years of service. Ten of those years were dedicated to investigating gang members inside one of the most active institutions in the state. I began my career in 1996 at Salinas Valley State Prison, transferred to Corcoran State Prison in 1999, and in 2003 moved to Deuel Vocational Institution. In 2007, I was assigned to the Investigative Services Unit, where I learned how to interview, debrief, validate, document, photograph, and testify against gang members. In 2023, I authored YARD DOWN: From the Crime Scene to Testifying in Court. In 2026, I wrote Investigating a Norteño Soldado, a training manual designed to teach law enforcement how Norteños operate inside a correctional setting and how to identify their structure, rules, and communication methods. My mission is simple: to teach law enforcement more effective tactics for dealing with gang members—how to identify, document, and investigate them with precision. I focus on giving officers the tools to recognize gang indicators, conduct credible interviews, and build solid gang cases that stand up in court.
