From MRI to MMI

By Rafael Levin MD MSC, Nomaan Ashraf MD MBA and Evan Baird MD

Overview

"Instructional Cases in Surgical Evaluation and Treatment of Compensable Work-Related Spine Injury Claims" takes readers from theory to the practical realities of everyday workers' compensation claims. Drawing on carefully selected, anonymized real-life cases from the authors' practice, each chapter illustrates critical concepts—mechanism of injury, causation analysis, indications for advanced imaging, resource utilization, return-to-work planning, maximal medical improvement, and surgical decision-making. Written by board-certified orthopedic spine surgeons Refael Levin, MD, MSc; Nomaan Ashraf, MD, MBA; and Evan Baird, MD, FAAOS of Comprehensive Spine Care, this book remains accessible to case nurses, adjusters, attorneys, and medical providers. The uniform format, key lessons, and supporting images make complex issues immediately relatable and actionable, offering a vivid, experience-based guide to optimizing outcomes from injury claim to MRI to MMI.

Description

"Instructional Cases in Surgical Evaluation and Treatment of Compensable Work-Related Spine Injury Claims" moves beyond theoretical discussion to the practical realities of managing everyday workers' compensation spine claims. Building on the conceptual foundation of the authors' earlier work, this volume presents a series of carefully selected, anonymized real-life cases drawn directly from clinical practice. Each chapter focuses on a single claim and illustrates one or more critical concepts, including mechanism of injury, pre-existing conditions, causation analysis, indications for advanced imaging, resource utilization, return-to-work planning, maximal medical improvement, and surgical decision-making. The cases highlight the unique challenges that arise when clinical findings must be interpreted within the legal and administrative framework of compensable work injuries. Written by board-certified orthopedic spine surgeons Rafael Levin, MD, MSc; Nomaan Ashraf, MD, MBA; and Evan Barid, MD, FAAOS—partners at Comprehensive Spine Care, a leading New Jersey practice established in 1996—the book reflects decades of combined experience dedicated to the evaluation and treatment of work-related spine injuries. The authors serve as preferred providers for numerous workers' compensation networks and bring specialized expertise in causation analysis, surgical decision-making, and occupation-related functional capacity. Designed to be accessible to case nurses, claims adjusters, attorneys, third-party administrators, and medical providers, the book uses a consistent format, concise key lessons, and supporting images to make complex issues immediately understandable and actionable. Readers gain practical insight into how careful clinical correlation, rigorous causation analysis, and thoughtful case management can improve outcomes for the injured worker while protecting the interests of all parties involved. From the initial occupational spine injury claim, followed by the almost inevitable MRI, through the determination of maximal medical improvement, this volume offers a clear, experience-based guide to navigating the distinctive challenges of compensable work-related spine injury claims.
