This book contains the story of the Evolution of the Steelband from 1936 to present. The second part of the narrative is dedicated to Anthony Williams leader, pan builder, tuner, arranger and composer of the Legendary Pan Am North Stars of St. James, Trinidad, West Indies.
Description
The Evolution of the Steelband is an analysis of the various stories of the steelband, and I attempted to find out what exactly happened. There was the Winston "Spree" Simon Story and the Alexander Ragtime band, out of Woodbrook story, which many claim is the beginning of the Steelband. Anthony Williams and Pan Am North Stars takes center stage in the second part of the book. His innovations and how they were able to change the steelband, the music and the instrument themselves.
About the author
AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF ROBERT SALDENHA Robert Saldenha was born in Port of Spain, and received his early education at Richmond Street Boys E.C. School and Woodbrook Government Secondary. Later he received a B.A. from the University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine Campus, Trinidad. He first started performing with Star Land Steel Orchestra, then Esso Tripoli Steel Orchestra when his family moved to St. James in Trinidad. He also performed with Pan Am North Stars Steel Orchestra before the band folded up, and was a founding member of 3rd Steel Orchestra.. At UWI, his Caribbean research project was entitled, "The Innovations of Anthony Williams (leader of Pan Am North Stars Steel Orchestra), and how they revolutionize the Steelband, Steelband music and Carnival. Presently he performs with Volume II Steelband in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.
