About The Author

Across five decades of communion with horses, Nancy K. Camp discovered a profound truth—these majestic beings were her greatest teachers, guiding her toward more compassionate and ethical approaches to training and care. This journey of mutual understanding led her to become a certified Connected Riding instructor and an accomplished equine and canine bodyworker.

With an M.A. in art history and 25 years of teaching experience at the college level, Nancy brings a unique perspective to her work in the equine world. Her passion for equine advocacy flows through her pen, with her writing appearing in Natural Horse magazine from 2003 to 2009. She collaborated with Peggy Cummings on the influential book, Connect with Your Horse from the Saddle, published in 2015.

Nancy's definitive work, In It for the Horses: A Journey from Whips to Whispers, chronicles her transformative journey in horsemanship, distilling a lifetime of wisdom into its pages. Her commitment to challenging conventional wisdom continues through her thought-provoking "Myth Busters" blog, where she fearlessly dismantles outdated training practices while offering enlightened alternatives for horse enthusiasts.

Though her roots stretch back to the prairies of Illinois, Nancy now draws inspiration from the majestic mountains of Idaho, where she starts each day embraced by breathtaking vistas and the sounds of diverse wildlife from a nearby wetland—a fitting backdrop for a woman who has dedicated her life to honoring the spirit of the horse.

Through her work and creative pursuits, including art and poetry inspired by her deep love for horses and dogs, Nancy aims to foster a deeper understanding of the compassionate bond between humans and animals and promote the pursuit of ethical horsemanship.

In It for the Horses, A Journey from Whips to Whispers Alija Turkovic for Readr’s Favorite In It for the Horses: A Journey from Whips to Whispers describes how Nancy K. Camp’s years of working with horses slowly changed her approach to horse care. Camp begins learning from new teachers, studying alternative approaches such as holistic dentistry, bodywork, and energy practices, and paying closer attention to what horses communicate through their behavior. Each step builds on the one before it, showing her gradual move away from force and toward listening. Change comes slowly, sometimes awkwardly, and that slowness is part of the point. Instead of offering a perfect solution, the book keeps returning to attention, patience, and care. It leaves room for uncertainty and learning rather than certainty and control. Readers who value animals as partners rather than tools, or who are open to rethinking long-standing practices, will connect with the honesty here more than with any single method the book mentions.
