About The Author

Es-Seyyid Es-Shaykh Taner Vargonen Tarsusi el Ansari er Rifai el Qadiri (known as Shaykh Taner; 1941–2023) was born and raised in Tarsus, Türkiye, in a devout Muslim family of seyyids, descendants of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He became the founder and spiritual guide (Pir and Murshid) of the Ansari Qadiri Rifai Tariqa (AQRT).
Shaykh Taner earned a Bachelor’s degree in English Language Teaching from Gazi University in Ankara, Türkiye, and later completed a Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics at Western Michigan University in the United States. During his years in Michigan, he helped establish and served in leadership for the Muslim Students Association of the United States and Canada.
In Türkiye, Shaykh Taner was among the early founders of the School/Faculty of Foreign Languages at the university in Tarsus, which later became affiliated with Çukurova University in Adana. As a professor, he designed programs and taught educational sciences, teacher training, and English as a Second Language (ESL/ELT) methodology. Over the course of his academic career, he trained more than one thousand English teachers before retiring.
Shaykh Taner was initiated into the Qadiri Rifai Tariqa in Istanbul by his shaykh, Es-Seyyid Es-Shaykh Muhyiddin Ansari, from whom he later received ijaza, the license to teach and guide in Sufism. His spiritual lineage also includes connections to the Naqshbandi, Mevlevi, and Bektashi Sufi orders.
In 1986, Shaykh Taner and Es-Seyyida Es-Shaykha Muzeyyen Vargonen Tarsusi el Ansari er Rifai el Qadiri (Shaykha Muzeyyen) were sent to the United States with the responsibility of establishing the Ansari branch of the Qadiri Rifai Tariqa as a new Sufi order. Together, they founded AQRT centers and communities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Tanzania, South Africa, Mexico, Mauritius, Germany, Canada, and Australia, traveling widely to teach and speak on Sufism, Islam, alternative healing, and sustainable living. They offered weekly live online talks to an international community of students. Throughout his life, Shaykh Taner guided seekers in person, online, and through his books.
For many years, Shaykh Taner spoke at the annual Sufi Symposium in California and participated in interfaith and educational events internationally. He gave talks and interviews at institutions including Harvard, Humboldt State, Boston University, Oxford university, and Napa Valley College, as well as at churches, synagogues, conferences, and interfaith gatherings.
Shaykh Taner was also known as a healer. Together with Shaykha Muzeyyen, he founded the Ansari Holistic Healing Institute (AHHI), offering complementary medicine and Sufi healing workshops for health professionals and spiritual seekers across the world.
Shaykh Taner passed away on August 27, 2023. Shaykha Muzeyyen Vargonen Ansari continues their work and serves as Pir and Murshid of the order. Shaykh Taner’s life of teaching, healing, and guiding seekers of the path remains a lasting legacy.

Description

In-Depth Analysis serves as a companion to Shaykh Taner's English translation, The Quran: Daily Reading for All Humanity, Chronological Edition. That translation emerged over years of group study, where students, scholars, and seekers read together under the Shaykh's guidance. Often, questions and reflections from those sessions opened the way for the deeper analyses presented here. The commentary begins with the Sura Al Qalam, The Pen, the second chronologically revealed chapter, and continues through passages chosen for their contemplative depth. References to both chronological and traditional sura numbering are provided for clarity. This book is an invitation to approach the Quran through contemplation, guided by the insights of Shaykh Taner Vargonen Ansari, the late head of the Ansari Qadiri Rifai Tariqa. Rather than offering a traditional tafsir, or scholarly interpretation, this work presents reflections born of ta'wil, insights that arise when one turns to Allah in remembrance and reflection. It is not a book of final answers but of openings, encouraging each reader to discover their own unique way of experiencing the Quran's living message. The Quran speaks on many levels: law, philosophy, guidance, and spiritual truth. This book focuses on those passages that call the seeker to pause, to remember Allah, and to ponder creation and the self. Legal sections are left untouched, as they are not intended for deep reflection, while selected suras, chapters, and ayats, verses, are explored for their capacity to awaken awareness. Shaykh Taner describes his commentary as kashf, inspirations given by Allah, shared not as definitive truths but as an encouragement for readers to begin their own journey of contemplation. Each person's path with Allah is unique, and the Quran offers insights specific to each seeker who approaches it with sincerity. Readers with an interest in Sufism will find particular value in this book, as many of the verses discussed shed light on practices such as zikr, repeated remembrance of Allah, and spiritual awareness. Yet its relevance extends beyond students of Sufism. Anyone who wishes to experience the Quran as a source of reflection and inner dialogue will find guidance here. The aim is not to replace scholarly study, but to encourage a personal encounter with the divine message. A glossary of key Arabic and Sufi terms is included to support readers of all backgrounds, and care is taken throughout to use simple and respectful language. This makes the book accessible both to those newly encountering Islamic teachings and to those seeking to deepen a lifelong study of the Quran. Shaykh Taner passed to Allah in August 2023, leaving this work, recognized for its rare spiritual depth, as part of his enduring legacy. His wife and successor, Murshida Shaykha Muzeyyen Vargonen Ansari, continues to guide the AQRT in its mission to encourage personal spiritual development through Sufism. Through this book, readers are offered a chance to connect with the Shaykh's contemplative insights and to carry forward the practice he encouraged: to read, to reflect, and to allow Allah's words to speak freshly to the heart. In essence, this book invites you to move beyond explanation and into conversation with the Quran itself. It encourages you to look at the signs in creation, in scripture, and in your own being, and to let them awaken you to a deeper knowledge of Allah. Whether you are approaching the Quran for the first time or returning after many years, this work offers a way to draw closer through contemplation, remembrance, and the ongoing discovery of divine truth.
