About The Author

In the 50s and 60s, Barney Lessing logged many hours listening to Mort Fega, Ed Beach, Billy Taylor, Les Davis and Symphony Sid on New York City radio. Visiting legendary jazz clubs in New York, Paris, and Philadelphia was a favorite pastime. Since then, in the years of raising a family and having a career as an educator, jazz has always been a passion. As an amateur saxophonist, he occasionally played in local jam sessions. In addition to being a lecturer, he has been a guest on several jazz radio programs as well as writing the liner notes for a jazz album. His Letters to the Editor have been published in the New York Times and Newsday. The book title, I Know Because I Was There, is reminiscent of an English son, "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square," lyrics, Eric Maschwitz. It is the favorite song of Linda, his beloved spouse, to whom he dedicates this book and with whom he will one day share eternity.
