Description

His Life Is the Message is a powerful blend of memoir and self-guided healing—an intimate story of legacy, wisdom, and the evolving role of medicine across generations. Spanning from the World War II era to today's complex healthcare landscape, this deeply personal narrative follows the life and influence of a devoted physician father and the enduring lessons he passed on—not through words, but through the quiet integrity of how he lived. Raised in the stillness of the Chesapeake Bay, the author reflects on a childhood shaped by observation, contemplation, and the profound impact of a man whose actions spoke louder than language. But this is more than a memoir. His Life Is the Message invites readers to become active participants in their own healing. Bridging storytelling with practical insight, the book empowers both patients and caregivers to reclaim their role within today's often overwhelming healthcare system. It explores the shift from "sick-care" to "self-care," revealing the hidden structures that can leave individuals feeling disempowered—and offers a path forward. At the heart of the book is a transformative idea: the presence of an Inner Physician—a deep, intuitive wisdom within each of us that can guide our health decisions, restore confidence, and foster a more meaningful partnership with medical providers, and more importantly, one's self. Through personal stories, thoughtful reflections, and actionable guidance, readers will learn to: * Navigate the modern healthcare system with clarity and confidence * Advocate for their needs and values in medical settings * Recognize and trust their own inner wisdom * Cultivate a more holistic, empowered approach to health and well-being Both reflective and practical, His Life Is the Message is a guide for anyone seeking to move from passive patient to empowered participant—honoring the past while reshaping the future of personal health.

About The Author

I earned a B.A. in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania, with a minor in art, before attending medical school at the University of Maryland. During my training, I developed a strong interest in nutrition and integrative medicine fields largely absent from traditional curricula at the time. Alongside fellow medical student and future author Alan Gaby, M.D., I independently studied the role of nutrition in health through extensive review of the scientific literature. Following medical school, I completed a surgical internship in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, before pursuing my true calling in internal medicine through a three-year residency at the University of Massachusetts. There, I further expanded my training with Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., studying Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, and later completed a fellow-ship in Behavioral Medicine under Herbert Benson, M.D., at Harvard Medical School. My career has spanned private practice, academic medicine, and leadership roles across the country. In Naples, Florida, I served as President of the Collier County Medical Society and advocated for expanded healthcare services for under-served migrant populations. I later held positions in Occupational and Rehabilitative Medicine, including work at Canyon Ranch in Tucson, Arizona—an internationally recognized integrative medicine center—where I also held a faculty appointment at the University of Arizona. In Boulder, Colorado, I practiced Integrative and Internal Medicine, served as Rehabilitation Director at Boulder Com-munity Hospital, and co-developed a Mind-Body Medicine course in collaboration with the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where I also taught clinical medicine. My work has also included serving diverse populations through positions on Native American reservations, further deepening my commitment to culturally responsive care. I later worked as a hospitalist with Catholic Health West (now Dignity Health) and as Clinical Director of the California Health & Longevity Institute. For years, my wife and I ran an integrative telemedicine practice called Conscious Health Consultants that was dedicated to personalized, whole-person care.
