Description

Every year in the United States, hundreds of thousands of newborns require specialized care in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Prematurity, low birth weight, breathing challenges, infections, congenital conditions, and complications during delivery are among the most common reasons infants are admitted. In the United States, roughly 1 in 10 U.S. infants (around 400,000) go to the NICU each year, with rates rising. The statistics are similar in Western Europe and rising across other countries. While precise global numbers are elusive, it's millions of infants each year. While NICU babies represent a smaller percentage of all births, the number is still significant, impacting families from every demographic and community. For many parents, a NICU admission comes unexpectedly, turning what should be a joyful moment and a quick return to home into one filled with anxiety, uncertainty, and emotional exhaustion. The length of stay for NICU babies varies widely, depending on their gestational age and medical complexity. Some infants may spend only a few days receiving support, while others, particularly those born very prematurely, may remain for weeks or even months. During this time, families often experience stress, disrupted routines, and the challenge of trying to bond in an environment filled with monitors, medical terminology, and constant worry. This book is intended to support families through a NICU journey. The words and illustration are meant to provide comfort, guidance, and hope.
