About the author
Monica Rasco is a retired children's librarian (Wimberley Village Library), a quilter, photographer, and grandmother of four exceptional grandchildren. The idea for "Goodnight Wimberley" came to her while shelving a variety of "Goodnight ......" books. The words were crafted on a few pleasant afternoons with her granddaughter, Abby Adams. Saida Jacobsen brought the book to life with her stunning illustrations of Wimberley landmarks. Miss Monica has lived in Wimberley with her husband, Jeff, since 1997. She often "thanks her lucky stars" to live in such a beautiful, friendly, and supportive community.

Lightning Bugs and Gentle Hugs Goodnight Wimberley is more than a local play on the Margaret Wise Brown classic from 1947. Like the greatest children’s literature, it proceeds through a child’s eyes to tell a vivid tale with profound lessons and enduring entertainment for readers of all ages. The story is deceptively simple. We descend on that familiar Ranch Road 12 drive from San Marcos (although it could equally be from Dripping Springs): “In a great green valley / Where a creek meets a river / There is a place called Wimberley.” We see familiar characters and places, and one by one bid them goodnight. And, in the drifting rhythm of falling to sleep, the images and places slowly become more natural, eternal, and even in a way spiritual, to the final goodnight. The shortest story requires the greatest care. When I interviewed Monica and Abby, they discussed matter-of-factly the hard decision whether to include one particular “as.” And while Monica is clearly lead author of this book, do not discount granddaughter Abby’s co-equal creative role. She has, after all, been a test audience from birth for her children’s librarian grandmother, listening to nearly as many different books as the days she has lived. She is the department of rhyme and chief inspiring officer. Bethsaida Jacobsen’s particular artwork, a combination of stylized line drawing and expressive watercolor, presents its own underlying theme that complements the narrative. Like Wimberley, her paintings have a loose, almost relaxed feel that belies intense introspection and devotion to craft. She also happens to be a neighbor. What a “sleepy little town.” Read more

Goodnight Wimberley is a wake-up call! Monica Rasco and her collaborators have done a wonderful service to the people of the lovely Hill Country village of Wimberley, Texas, and all those people who love Wimberley. In the charming and simple guise of a full-color children's book, the author, co-author and illustrator pay homage to this remarkable place, its ambient charm, and exquisite natural surroundings. As a resident of Wimberley for 24+ years now myself, I also recognize two gifts this book offers: First, it is a great introduction for anyone who does not yet know this special place. Secondly, it is a wake-up call to those of us blessed to live in this area to take none of our blessings here for granted. A book to cherish yourself, and a wonderful thing to give to people you love! - Bruce P. Grether Read more
