Description

Have you watched hockey from afar, wishing you could play but not believing you could even learn how to skate, much less compete in a game? How does a girl get started in the sport, especially when she sees mostly boys who are playing? If you have been playing already, what path can you take in the world of girls hockey to get what you want out of the sport? This book spells out what a girl needs to know to play ice hockey, including how to find a program or place to get started in the sport; what equipment a girl needs and how to find the right fit; how to play, what the rules are, and on-ice tips and strategies; and how to train and prepare for game time. Performance coach and former professional hockey player Nichelle Simon — dubbed the most interesting woman in hockey by The Hockey News in 2019 — and fitness instructor and psychotherapist Hala Ghanem provide a detailed, colorful roadmap of paths girls are taking in hockey, from just starting out, how to get to an elite level, what the college and professional women's hockey landscape looks like, and ways to enjoy the sport on and off the ice!

About the author

NICHELLE SIMON is a lifelong athlete with a striking passion for hockey. She discovered hockey on the sun-scorched roller hockey courts of South Florida. She was 11 years old at the time and ice rinks in the southern U.S. — let alone hockey guidebooks for girls — were in short supply. Nichelle moved rather slowly into the competitive realm of ice hockey, but at age 17 she was accepted to play hockey for one of the most prestigious preparatory hockey schools in the country, Shattuck St. Mary's. She went on to play NCAA hockey, and in 2005, Nichelle began coaching while continuing to hone her playing skills. Setbacks are part of every journey, and at the age of 35, Nichelle was diagnosed with breast cancer. In the ultimate feat of resiliency and determination, she not only beat cancer, but became the oldest rookie to ever sign a professional contract to play in the National Women's Hockey League. The year was 2019, and she was 36 years old. Nichelle has since devoted her life to showing girls how strong they can become. Twice a competitor on American Ninja Warrior, she now coaches people of all ages at Lifelete Training, helping them move forward with their personal, professional and athletic goals. HALA GHANEM LPC, LCADC is a psychotherapist and a passionate hockey mom with extensive experience in the media and wellness industries. A former actress, radio show producer and TV news editor, Hala transitioned to the fitness industry, becoming a well sought-after yoga and fitness instructor and a studio owner. She combines her knowledge from entertainment, fitness, and mental health along with her entrepreneurial spirit in writing and marketing this book.
