Wonderful novella Review #1: Review by Michelle Stanley Reviewed By: Michelle Stanley Review Rating: Reviewed By Michelle Stanley for Readers’ Favorite Giraffe Island is a children’s adventure by Ben Cooke. Exotic animals from around the world were sent to a zoo in Vancouver, Canada. Georgia the giraffe was taken from her home in Congo, Africa. While being transported on a train to the zoo, she escaped and jumped onto a passing cruise boat, landing so hard she felt dizzy but free. When the boat passed some islands, she slid into the water and waded towards one of them. Georgia was extremely hungry and ate unfamiliar plants and berries that upset her tummy. While searching for better food, she found two little girls eating her favorite fruit, apricots. Georgia grabbed the fruit from the surprised girls’ hands and ate it. The girls, Leighton and Hazel, befriended Georgia and hid her in the woods. They were unaware of the danger that the giraffe would soon face. What a lovely storybook for children by Ben Cooke. Giraffe Island is an adventure with historical and educational information about the railroad and some geography that children should find fascinating. It's good learning material for teachers to use. Leighton and Hazel are very smart, quick-witted, and caring, and Georgia the giraffe is adorable. Leighton sure knows how to use a slingshot. The sketches are done nicely in a setting that connects with the historical era of the railway. Ben Cooke’s writing is strong and compassionate, as this story ought to be. Giraffe Island comes highly recommended. Young readers will enjoy this very short adventurous novella. Read more
