Overview

Forward On is a narrative memoir that follows a retired Marine Sergeant Major on a solo thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail as he confronts the weight of combat, fractured relationships, faith, leadership, and personal accountability. Moving mile by mile through the mountains, the journey becomes both physical and internal, forcing reflection on identity, resilience, and what it means to move forward after a life defined by service. Blending long-distance adventure with candid self-examination, the story weaves military experience, international travel, and trail encounters into an honest exploration of endurance, moral complexity, and reinvention. This is not a guidebook or a manifesto, but a lived account of carrying the past, owning mistakes, and choosing motion over stagnation.

Description

Forward On: Warrior to Wanderer is a raw, reflective memoir that traces a retired Marine Sergeant Major's solo thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail as he confronts the personal terrain shaped by war, leadership, faith, and loss. What begins as a physical challenge quickly becomes an inward reckoning, where long days and quiet miles strip away distraction and force difficult truths to surface. As the trail unfolds, memories of combat, fractured family ties, moral missteps, and professional identity collide with moments of humor, humility, and unexpected connection. The journey is interwoven with reflections from a life spent leading under pressure, training soldiers abroad, and navigating reinvention after military service. International travel, wilderness solitude, and trail encounters all serve as mirrors for examining accountability, resilience, and the discipline required to move forward honestly. This memoir presents an unfiltered account of endurance, self-awareness, and deliberate progress. Forward On is a story about carrying what cannot be outrun, learning to navigate without a fixed compass, and choosing forward motion even when the path is unclear.
