Overview
Breaking out of the traditional Zombie horrors plots that have plagued bookshelves for several years now, AG Rives provides readers a revitalized outlook on apocalyptic tales with by adding a unique nautical twist. After suffering the tragic loss of his wife and child, Drew Macfarland sets out to rediscover himself by circumnavigating the globe. Aboard his sailboat, the Hannah Cole, Drew begins taking steps towards his final goal. However, on return from a three-day sea trial, he stumbles into a situation no amount of physical or mental prowess would prepare him for. Flag 9 is a tale of adventure and survival, providing rare glimpses into the underlying nature of human emotion. Sometimes it takes more than just life’s basic necessities to stay human.
Description
It was a phone call with my girlfriend Margaret and an episode of AMC’s The Walking Dead (pick any one) that set Drew on his journey. “I’m going to write a Zombie book,” I announced as we said goodnight (sure you will, she was probably thinking). Setting the phone down, I opened my laptop and stared at the stark whiteness of a fresh Microsoft Word document. My motivation wasn’t any particular episode of that miniseries but the culmination of all the genre books, movies, and TV shows that I had enjoyed since I was a kid. I remember looking forward to a local access show that came on every Saturday, Commander USA’s Groovy Movies. It came on after cartoons. What you got was a pair of the worst horror thrillers produced, hosted by a middle aged dad in a superhero outfit that did magic tricks during commercial breaks. I couldn’t get enough and just like my love of candy has never changed, neither has my interest in creepy stories. That being said, I set out to do something a little different in a new environment. I wanted to freshen up the genre with a tale of a disrupted solo-circumnavigation attempt. At first, I tried to guide Drew but ultimately he was the one that took me on a trip. For that I am in his debt. My hope is that you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it. Thank you.
