Description

Finding Nicole is the true story of a victim's determination to keep herself and her family alive despite her ex-husband's attempts to hire inmates to kill her from prison. Nicole shares intimate details about her abuse, its effects on her psyche and family. She exposes mind-blowing defects within the legal system that could have cost her family their lives.

Nicole shares her journey from domestic violence victim to survivor in a very honest and vulnerable way. She takes us through the cycle of domestic violence and the wide range of emotions experienced including love, loss, betrayal, fear and hope. At the conclusion of her story, Nicole provides a guidebook for victims and survivors of domestic violence, stalking and toxic relationships. The goal of this guidebook is to help victims leave safely, feel hope, build resilience and find themselves again.

Nicole met her ex-husband in college and over the course of the next 10 years found herself in an increasingly abusive and violent relationship. Like many victims she stayed in this relationship for a multitude of reasons including love, for her children, due to financial abuse and fear. Nicole finally left her abusive ex-husband in 2009 and faced stalking, threats and harassment at the hands of her abuser for the next two and a half years until he was finally convicted of stalking after she delivered a powerful victim impact statement at his sentencing hearing.

Unfortunately her abuser continued to pose a threat to her and their children from prison as he attempted to hire multiple inmates to kill her and her children during his incarceration. Due multiple errors by law enforcement officers, miscommunication between the prison system and law enforcement and a Prosecutor who did not believe that a jury would believe the testimony of other inmates, her abuser was set to be released from prison at the conclusion of his original sentence. Nicole researched recreating her identity, relocation and ways of protecting herself and her children. She found out just how difficult it would be to find employment and housing after an identity change would leave her with no work, education or credit history.

After careful consideration she decided to stay and fight for new charges to be brought against her ex-husband. Through social media she enlisted the help of family, friends, other survivors of domestic violence and stalking to help her share her story and plead with the authorities to help protect her family. Over the course of just a few short weeks her story went viral and was shared across the country and world. Thousands of people stood with her and advocated for her family through phone calls, emails, posts and tweets.

To Nicole's joy their efforts paid off and her case was picked up by the Attorney General of the State of Michigan. Over the course of the next 13 months and multiple court hearings in three different counties Nicole's abuser was found guilty of new charges and sentenced to a longer prison sentence allowing her and her children to live with less fear for the next 11 years.

This is her story.

A MUST READ and Pass it on! Finding Nicole is a window into the heart and mind of the author, Nicole Beverly. It is a must read for not only victims and survivors of intimate partner and domestic violence, but also for their family and friends, advocates, law enforcement, and volunteers that work in this space. As I read it, I became Nicole. I felt her joy, anger, and frustration, and I felt her fear. It is a step by step account of how her abuser drew her in and used his control to terrorize her. When she was able to create her plan to leave safely with her children, we are presented with the huge gaps and terrible flaws in our system. What is supposed to be created to protect victims, clearly did not, law enforcement and the legal system let her down time and time again. Each time there was hope I felt her anxiousness that accompanied that hope. As her abuser loses his power he spins dangerously out of control as is often the case in the abusive cycle. His threats are real and terrifying. Unfortunately, many in our entire legal system are not trained in understanding this and revictimize Nicole time and time again. She never gives up pushing back against the system that has set her up to likely fail and perhaps die. The ache in her gut that comes with fear, I have felt that constant pain, but it could be sprinkled with hope. When justice is finally served it brings Nicole some peace, but when you’re a survivor that peace is different. At the end of the book there is a large wonderful Bonus Guidebook Section with tips and tools for understanding and recovering from an abusive relationship. It’s hard for me to say what was more valuable, Nicole’s journey to finding herself or the guidebook, they both offer a unique and powerful view into domestic violence and our society. I am in awe of Nicole and the courage it took for her to share so completely her most vulnerable self with the sole purpose of educating and helping others. She found her power and is using it to make positive change in our community. Read Finding Nicole and pass it on!-- Read more

Nicole’ Story Touches The Heart I have read many books on domestic violence. Never a book as powerfully touching as this one. I would read several pages, put the book aside and return when my heart could handle the power of her words. Is this an easy story to read? No! Is it a story every woman should read? YES! As a mother of two daughters I found the “Red Flag” section very valuable. I strive to teach my girls to love themselves enough to accept only pure, honest love . After reading this book we learn the warning signs of the young man who APPEARS to love you so much that he only wants you for himself and even says “I can’t believe your mine!” It would seem that would be everyone’s happily ever after. It is not. As Nicole says it takes time to FIND yourself. It is a process. Nicole’s story brings such strength and vulnerability. A must read! Read more

Finding Nicole If you are wondering whether this is a good read or not, don’t wonder - READ it! It is not just an account of a survivor’s story of domestic abuse, but rather it reads like a mystery. I read it in one sitting (started it late one night and couldn’t put it down until I was finished, which was early the next morning). The true life events are unbelievable, the resources beyond helpful and the underlying lesson that each of us are ENOUGH! Read more

Amazed “Finding Nicole” is a quick and deeply moving read. I struggled to put the book down! Nicole is honest, vulnerable, and raw in this book. She describes the horror she and her children faced. She details the disappointing process of navigating the justice system, and how she finally, with a community of supporters, turned terror and bleakness into positivity and support for survivors everywhere. The book includes useful information, tips, and resources as well. An excellent and inspiring read. Read more

Finding Nicole I just finished reading “Finding Nicole”, a book written by one of my best friend’s...a part of her life story that not only ripped my heart out but also made me proud to know her and love her! I admire, so much, her perseverance and determination to live and keep pushing through even when it seemed hopeless. I am also compelled to join her in the fight to raise awareness and educate about domestic violence so others do not have to experience abuse at the hands of their intimate partners. Bravo Nicole!! You won’t want to put it down...inspiring and informative!! Read more

Finding Nicole This book was written in a way that I could not stop, even for a minute. Nicole did a fantastic job exposing the signs and traits of an abuser, the tremendous flaws in our legal system and the people in it. Her strength and courage to share her story will not only help other victims of domestic violence but make anyone who reads this be more aware. They will think twice about their neighbor, coworker, friend or family member that may appear fine on the outside but may show signs or patterns that they are in danger. Thank you Nicole for your bravery and sincere efforts helping victims, making changes in our legal system and raising awareness of this dark and often invisible monster, domestic violence. Read more
