Felix and Phoebe's Robot

"Felix and Phoebe's Robot" is a children's story book that begins to introduce the world of STEM to young minds in a comprehensible and unique way. The book is focused on two main characters, Phoebe and Felix, who work together to build a robot that can toast a piece of bread. The two go through the engineering design process confronting challenges by coming up with innovative solutions.

"Felix and Phoebe's Robot" is a story that follows the titular Felix and Phoebe as they face a problem in their daily life. Felix struggles to make a perfect slice of toast in the morning, inspiring the pair to work together to try and create a robot to toast the bread for them. Following the steps of the Engineering Design Process, the pair work their way through asking, imagining, researching, drawing, building, testing, and improving their robot. Learning about safety and overcoming design failures, Felix and Phoebe are finally able to enjoy their perfect toast! Lovingly created by a team of students, this story is dedicated to the late Woodie Flowers, and hopes to inspire the same love of robotics in children as Flowers inspired in all of us.

Team 4 ELEMENT is a robotics team operating out of High Tech Los Angeles Charter High School in Lake Balboa, California. Team 4 strives to spread the ideas of STEM, which form the core tenets of FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology).
