Fall Like Rain is a work of historical fiction rooted in real-world issues and was penned by author Nell Corbly. The central figure is Sophy Seng, a postgraduate student looking for something new in her life to pad out her resume for future job hunting. She seeks out her roots in the birth country of her parents, Cambodia, but here Sophy finds a people lost in the wake of tragedy. The diary of a girl named Kunthea tells the tale of survivors of the Khmer Rouge genocidal atrocity, and Sophy soon learns the truth about survival amongst secrets, darkness, and poverty.

Author Nell Corbly really knows how to touch the heartstrings in this moving and highly engaging account of Cambodian life from 1980 onwards. The bond and parallels drawn between the two central figures of the tale – Sophy and Kunthea – allow us to come closer and learn about the realities of living in the unspoken aftermath of the Khmer Rouge, through the eyes of characters who had survived its many horrors. But the content is delivered with great compassion rather than sensationalism, teaching important lessons to Sophy and to readers along the way. There are Christian themes present in the work, but they are not overbearing to the tale and supplement the ideas presented in the storyline really well. The dialogue too has authenticity in both the speech and silence of the people and their experiences. Overall, Fall Like Rain is an excellent novel recommended for fans of personal drama and emotive historical fiction.

Nell Corbly has worked and lived in Cambodia for over eighteen years. After learning the language, she had the opportunity to hear the real stories of many Cambodians who have fought to rebuild their lives after the Khmer Rouge genocide and the subsequent unrest.
