Captain Arduus took the mission to escape his life on Earth, but he could not escape himself. A routine mapping mission of a new region of space goes bad. He's supposed to be the last off the ship, but to the surprise of many, he manages to be on the only life pod that survives. A tiny fraction of his crew crash land on an uncharted planet. There's a violent misunderstanding with the aliens and he loses everybody. Somehow, again, he survives. He doesn't deserve it, but the aliens take him in and teach him to adapt to their culture.
