Overview

If you have spent decades traveling, doing concert tours and taking every opportunity to engage with people along the way, inevitably, you will accrue a wealth of stories. What do they mean? Can these chance encounters with people, places and sheer happenstance be more than just a collection of anecdotes? Could crossing paths with, say, a tennis racquet-wielding monk, or making a trek to a mother river's headwaters, or witnessing a glorious pre-dawn salmon run offer something deeper? Perhaps an opportunity to discover Beauty? Insight? And finally, Wisdom? For years, Guitarist/Composer/Author Michael DeLalla has been sharing stories with his concert audiences that tell of this daily quest for Wisdom through these seemingly random meetups with an entity he calls the Cosmic Messenger, often variously disguised as ordinary people, places and events. This anthology of essays, part memoir, part windshield-framed musings, draws from these experiences and their subsequent reflections, documented contemporaneously in the writings and observations found in his blog posts and tour journals. All of the stories are true. They also reveal simple yet profound truths about how we can live each day as if it were an opportunity to reaffirm a sense of purpose. Acknowledging one's purpose offers insight; insight can lead to optimism and a sense of what's possible if we live with the intention of striving to embody our best selves. These encounters are available to us all, should we but open ourselves to them.

Description

"Encounters with the Cosmic Messenger" is a collection of essays by guitarist/composer/author Michael DeLalla, culled from his journals and tour blog that document a musician's life immersed in creativity and his never-ending search for Beauty, Insight and Wisdom. Michael's travels include all 50 United States (with performances in 44 of them), as well Canada and Europe. Throughout these travels, Michael endeavors to immerse himself in whatever place he happens to land by walking or biking around, never wasting an opportunity to chat up a local. The 28 essays that comprise "Encounters with the Cosmic Messenger" are divided into three sections: 'The Mysterious Wisdom of Strangers,' 'The Road Speaks Fluent Wisdom,' and finally, 'Seeking Beauty, Finding Insight, Sparking Wisdom.' Along the way, the reader will meet fascinating people, including a tennis-racquet wielding monk, a 103-year-old mentor, the villagers of a small French village who are arguing at lunchtime and romancing by mid-afternoon, a 'wine-whisperer' who knows how the land can inform a vintage, and countless meetups with nameless strangers that have touched Michael over the years and fostered his own unflagging optimistic quest for insight to the human condition.

Wonderful Book—Built to Last, and Built to Love Encounters with a Cosmic Messenger is a thoughtful, artful collection of essays. Each vignette is a window into something deeper—humor, humanity, memory, meaning. Whether you read one a night or take the whole journey in a few sittings, (or read it multiple times as I did), you’ll come away seeing the world a little differently. My favorite story, “That Which is Built on a Last is Built to Last,” is a reflection on the author’s father, a master cobbler, and the life lessons passed down through leather, tools, and tradition. But it becomes something more—a metaphor for how we’re shaped by the tension between where we come from and what we face in the present. The story is rich with love, craft, and philosophy—woven together like a pair of hand-stitched soles. As DeLalla writes, “Each of us is like the leather between the hammer and the last… shaped by both the past and the now.” That line alone sums up the gift of this book—it’s not just storytelling, it’s soul work. Whether he’s recalling a musical tour, a stranger on the road, or a quiet personal insight, DeLalla brings humor, humility, and grace to every page. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good story—and a good think. Read more
