"Empowered Sleep Apnea" is a curriculum designed by a Sleep Medicine master-clinician to help patients understand their condition, find agency and feel empowered to make decisions on their treatment. It's the Big Blue Bendable version.

Unlike standard textbooks, this book uses humor, cartooning, storytelling, fantasy, and poetry to take the reader on a rollicking educational journey. "Empowered Sleep Apnea" creates a safe, welcoming, and patient-centered space that will delight patients and their providers alike. The teaching curriculum is designed by a Sleep Medicine master-clinician to help patients understand their condition, find agency and feel empowered to make decisions on their treatment.

David E. McCarty, MD, FAASM attended medical school at Duke University School of Medicine and completed a residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. After a handful of years of practicing primary care, he studied Sleep Medicine with Dr. Andrew Chesson at LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, joining the faculty and taking over as program director upon Dr. Chesson's retirement. In 2015, he left academics to join a new comprehensive Sleep Medicine practice, Colorado Sleep Institute, in Boulder, as its first Medical Director. In 2021, he left clinical practice for broader educational efforts to provide patients with a sense of agency and empowerment.
