Echoes of Enigmas

Rick Kabat has been chasing the question "Why?" since first grade, when he first scribbled ideas with crayons and wondered at the world beyond the classroom window. Over the decades, those early scribbles evolved — trading wax for pencils, then pens, and eventually the glowing screen of Microsoft Word—while the fundamental curiosity never dimmed. Professionally, Rick built a career in aerospace engineering, including roles as a satellite operations director and systems engineer. He authored countless technical documents for NASA and government agencies: specifications, reports, procedures, analyses —precise, rule-bound language that kept missions on track and spacecraft development on course. The work demanded rigor and logic, rewarding those who could wrestle complexity into clarity. Yet beneath the equations and orbital mechanics, something else was stirring. Rick discovered poetry — a realm where rules could be joyfully broken, where ambiguity was not a flaw but a feature, and where emotion and imagination could roam freely. Poetry became the counterpoint to his technical life: a space to explore wonder without needing proof, to wrestle with the unanswerable, and to express what diagrams and data never capture. When he's not winning logo design contests (a quirky side talent), pondering the vastness of the universe, or marveling at the intricacies of human connection, Rick writes poems that bridge his two worlds. His work probes the cosmos — its scale, its mysteries, its indifference — and the intimate human experiences of love, loss, awe, and persistence. With the same wide-eyed questioning he carried into first grade, he searches for meaning in the stars, in relationships, and in the quiet moments when one dreams of realms beyond the finite. Rick continues to ask "Why?" — now with a poet's pen and an engineer's disciplined heart. This is his first book.
