When the authors oldest daughter was in first grade she was diagnosed with a reading comprehension problem. After seeing a specialist it was discovered that a colored overlay helped her daughter to read. Words that were previously running off of the page finally sat still. Fast forward thirty years. The author began observing her first granddaughter struggle with learning to read. Seeing the desperation in her eyes every time she picked up a book she realized that her granddaughter was experiencing a similar relationship with reading that her oldest daughter had had.
The author feels that dyslexia is often overlooked or labeled as laziness whereas it is a real issue that needs be addressed and implemented in universal learning.
