"Drawing from Memory" is an introduction to the works of Curtis Lee Fairley, a self-taught artist and US Navy veteran. The text tells the story of the author's acquaintance with Fairley in New York City in the late 1980s and Lawrence's subsequent research into Fairley's life and naval career, based on information contained in the drawings. The book showcases 37 full-color reproductions of Fairley's works.

Curtis Fairley created the works largely from his memories of 31 years of service, from 1947 to 1976, in the US Navy. The drawings include Fairley's depictions of a variety of ships, historic expeditions, illustrated recipes from his work as cook and pantryman and detailed annotations of his life and experiences. Since his last interaction with Fairley in 1989, Lawrence has pieced together a remarkable history based on the visual and written information contained in the drawings. The story also reveals that Fairley's drawings continue to appear in other collections of "outsider art." The final section of the book contains six works courtesy of the Zander Collection, Cologne Germany.
